How to Calculate your Horse’s Weight

The most accurate way to find out how much your horse weighs would be to use a weighbridge or a rough guide can be calibrated using a special tape measure, but there is a time honoured formula:

Girth2 x length divided by 300 = weight in lbs

The girth measurement is taken in inches round the barrel from just behind the withers through the girth groove. The square of
the girth is obtained by multiplying the figure by itself.

Length is taken from the point of the shoulder upwards to the point of the buttock. To find out the weight in kilos, measure the girth in centimetres and, with the help of a calculator, divide by 8700.
