Facts and Advice

Heat in the foot does not necessarily indicate the onset of laminitis as hoof temperature can fluctuate naturally. Feel your horse’s hooves daily and get to know what is normal.

Box rest with a good, deep bed is essential in the early stages of laminitis, quality wood shavings are ideal.

Many ponies and horses do very well on a high fibre/forage diet with Lami-Light.

Your farrier can play an important role in your horse’s recovery. Correct trimming and special shoes may help, but the chosen technique will depend on the severity of the case.

Think ahead – keep your pony or horse fit and trim throughout the year. As seasons become milder and wetter, don’t get caught out by the early arrival of spring grass or a second flush of grass in the autumn.

Some ponies appear more susceptible to laminitis after being turned out in the snow
