Dental Care

In general, a vet or equine dentist should assess your horses' teeth at least once or preferably twice a year, and more often for older horses or those with a problem. Horses can develop problems with their teeth from an early age, even the young horse should have his teeth examined to ensure he can grind his food efficiently or this can have a detrimental effect on his growth and development.

In the adult horse, many symptoms not necessarily associated with teeth may also become evident; the effect of the smallest discomfort in the mouth cannot be underestimated. Back problems, head throwing, leaning on the bit, rearing and many other behavioural traits, could in fact be related to dental issues. The horse may also suffer from any number of health complications, weight loss, poor appetite, loss of performance, dull lacklustre coat, quidding and digestive upsets.
