Tina Cook, the 2009 dual bronze eventing medallist, is in a race to requalify Olympic ride Miners Frolic for London 2012 after the 14 year-old missed most of last season due to life-threatening colitis.
Cook, who attended official team training this week just days after the death of her father, racehorse trainer Josh Gifford, takes Miners Frolic to Ballindenisk in Ireland at the end of this month, a competition created ahead of the official start of the season to help those still ineligible.
Cook’s father famously brought the chaser Aldaniti back from the brink to win the Grand National under Bob Champion. “It would be a wonderful fairy story if we could do the same with Henry after all he went through last year,” said Cook. “Going straight to a three-day event isn’t ideal but we need to get our Olympic qualifications as soon as possible, then work out what I have to do to get on the team.” Fifteen horse and rider combinations must be chosen by June 17 and the IOC notified of the final five by July 6.
