NSAIDs (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) are unfortunately the first choice of many traditional vets, instead of natural horse supplements, when they face a horse with mobility problems such as arthritis, even though there are possible side effects of using NSAIDs that are often not made clear by vets.

Whilst we are not saying that there is no place for NSAIDs in the treatment of horse arthritis and similar conditions we do think that other options should be explored before NSAIDs are prescribed, such as natural horse supplements, especially those containing rosehip.

Rosehip horse supplement
Supplements including magnesium, Glucosamine, Organic MSM (Methyl-sulphonyl-methane), Yucca (Yucca schidigera), and Rosehip extract (Rosa canina) and many more, provide the nutrition that the horse’s joints need to function correctly. Rosehip supplements for horses have been proven to be 40% more effective that glucosamine (The Daily Telegraph. 19/05/09). These can ensure long-term joint health and a reduction in the symptoms of problems such as arthritis. An example of a nutritional supplement for horse’s joints that includes Rosehip is Blue Chip Joint RLF, which combines rosehip for horses, glucosamine, omega oils, MSM and other active ingredients into a nutritional supplement for horses, which is added to a horse’s regular feed.

This is just one alternative to help the repair of the joints, as opposed to NSAIDs, which simply limit the pain experienced by the horse.
